Now, the decision lies in the hands of the community. If the proposal is passed, Celo will embark on the journey to become part of the Superchain.
Over the past year, cLabs, the team behind Celo's development, has diligently evaluated numerous proposals from top layer-2 tech stacks. This evaluation was part of the blockchain's migration to a new layer-2 network. The team's decision, based on extensive research and invaluable community feedback, is to adopt the OP Stack and the Superchain community. This milestone represents a significant leap forward in their journey to becoming a layer 2.
From L1 to Superchain
Since 2020, Celo has been committed to developing a scalable, mobile-first Blockchain to democratize blockchain accessibility. However, the journey was not without its challenges. Building an L1 ecosystem proved to be a formidable task. Recognizing these challenges, in 2023, the leadership team began exploring the potential of leveraging the Ethereum L2 space. After considering various proposals from Polygon Labs, Matter Labs, Offchain Labs, and OP Labs and engaging in extensive research and debate, cLabs concluded that migrating Celo to the Ethereum ecosystem as an OP Chain would best accelerate their mission.
Celo is now embarking on a journey to merge into the Superchain and launch its OP Chain. The Superchain is dedicated to funding public goods and nurturing a sustainable future for Ethereum. This commitment deeply resonates with the Celo community, fostering a unified approach to ecosystem development.
